The International Day of Happiness

Laura Kronen Happy Face

Happiness is something that we all strive for, whether we realize it or not. We all have our own ideas of what happiness means to us, and we all have our own ways of trying to achieve it. Some people might think that happiness comes from material possessions, like a fancy car or a big house. Others might believe that happiness comes from having a successful career or a large social circle. But the truth is, happiness is different for everyone, and it can come from the simplest of things.

One thing that always makes me happy is spending time with my friends and family. Whether we're just hanging out at home, watching a movie or playing board games, or we're out exploring new places and trying new things, being with the people I love always brings a smile to my face. There's just something about the warmth and comfort of being around people who know and love you that can't be beat.

Another thing that brings me happiness is music. I love nothing more than cranking up the volume on my favorite songs and singing along at the top of my lungs. Whether it's an upbeat pop song that gets me dancing, a soulful ballad that brings me to tears, or a classic rock anthem that makes me feel invincible, music has the power to lift my mood and make me feel alive.

But enough about me, let's talk about the International Day of Happiness. This day was first celebrated on March 20th, 2013, after it was established by the United Nations General Assembly. The purpose of the day is to recognize the importance of happiness in our lives and to promote happiness as a universal goal for all people.

So how do we celebrate the International Day of Happiness? Well, there are a lot of ways! Some people might choose to volunteer their time to help others, whether it's by serving food at a soup kitchen, visiting sick children in a hospital, or cleaning up a local park. Others might choose to spread happiness in their own small way, by leaving kind notes for their coworkers, paying for someone's coffee in line behind them, or simply smiling and saying hello to strangers on the street.

Another great way to celebrate the International Day of Happiness is by doing something that makes you happy. Maybe that means taking a day off work to do something you've been wanting to do for a while, like visiting a museum, going on a hike, or trying a new restaurant. Or maybe it means doing something small, like treating yourself to your favorite dessert or taking a bubble bath.

One thing that I think is particularly important on the International Day of Happiness is to take some time to reflect on the things that make you happy and grateful. It's easy to get caught up in the stresses and challenges of everyday life, but taking a few moments to appreciate the good things in your life can help you feel more grounded and content. Maybe you're grateful for your health, your job, your family, or your pet. Maybe you're grateful for a sunny day or a delicious meal. Whatever it is, taking the time to acknowledge it can help you feel happier and more at peace.

Of course, it's important to remember that happiness isn't something that can be forced or manufactured. You can't simply will yourself to be happy all the time, and trying to do so can actually be counterproductive. Sometimes, we have to allow ourselves to feel sad or frustrated or angry, because those emotions are a natural part of life. But even when we're feeling down, we can still find small moments of happiness and joy to hold onto.

But today, don’t worry, be happy!
